Melbourne’s
mega summer boat show
The 2009 Melbourne International Boat & Lifestyle
Show is shaping up as the fastest-growing lifestyle event
of its
type in Australia with more than $100 million of boats expected
to be on the water.
To be held at Docklands, 30 January
to 1 February, some of the largest and most luxurious boats
in the country will create
a spectacular on-water display, while a significant number
of on-land exhibits – from the latest in trailerboats
and marine accessories to travel and holiday information – will
stretch from NewQuay to Waterfront City.
BIA Victoria general manager Robert
Coco said the growth of the Melbourne International Boat & Lifestyle Show mirrored
the state’s escalating enthusiasm for waterfront living
and recreational boating.
“The City of Melbourne, as a major sponsor, is investing
heavily to promote the Melbourne International Boat and Lifestyle
Show as one of the major events on the city’s calendar,” Mr
Coco said.
“There’s little doubt the
pipeline of waterfront and harbour developments in and around
Port Phillip and Western
Port will underwrite even stronger growth in the event over
the next decade.”
At the higher end of the scale, Australian
marques such as Riviera and Caribbean will attract discerning
boaters’ attention,
while luxury sailing yacht enthusiasts – both racers
and cruisers – will be tempted by the likes of Beneteau,
Hanse and Jeanneau.
The Melbourne International Boat & Lifestyle
Show has also been chosen as the Australian premiere launch
boat show
for the Hanse 400, Hunter 27 Edge, Fjord 40 Cruiser and the
legally-towable (without permits) Caribbean 24 Open Runabout.
Leading fibreglass and aluminium trailerboat
brands will also have a strong presence – among them
Melbourne-based Bar Crusher, which will unveil its new 760
at the show.
Marine engines, electronics, propellers, fishing and watersports
gear, along with a massive range of other related equipment
will be on display in marquees along the promenade.
Children and adults alike will be kept
entertained with free interactive activities such as ‘come try’ sailing
and canoeing, boat rides, stage activities, the ever-popular
Flathead Fred fishing clinics and informative talks from other
leading identities in their fields.
Show patrons will also have the once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to look around the unique, world record-breaking
Earthrace
vessel. In June 2008, this futuristic vessel set a new world
record for a powerboat to circle the globe – and did
this with 100% renewable biodiesel fuel and a net zero carbon
footprint.
Many components of the 2009 Melbourne
International Boat & Lifestyle
Show will be free to the public, including access to all the
open space exhibits along the promenade and the shell scheme.
Access to boats on the marina will be ticketed: adults $12;
families $28 (two adults and up to three children); children
under 16 and concession card holders $6.

Clairabella again onboard with Variety
Variety Splash supporter ‘Team Clairabella’ will
host a gala fundraising evening at Williamstown’s Royal
Victorian Motor Yacht Club (RVMYC) this Saturday 22 November.
Raising money for Variety, the children’s
charity, the gala evening includes a sit-down dinner, drinks
and live music,
along with a series of fundraising auctions. Items up for grabs
will include corporate sport packages, original artwork, memorabilia,
day spa packages and days out onboard Team Clairabella boats.
As one of the major entrants in the
2009 Variety Splash, Team Clairabella comprises four power
boats – Clairabella,
a 44’ Outsider flybridge cruiser; Limelight III, a 47’ Riviera
flybridge cruiser; Nor’ West, a Novatec Tradewinds 40’ displacement
cruiser; and Uelya, a 38’ Randell flybridge gentlemen’s
cruiser – all of which can entertain 10 people in comfort.
This will be the second year Clairabella
has participated in the Variety Splash, following the success
of last February’s
inaugural event, in which participants raised over $130,000
to help improve the lives of Victoria’s Special Needs
Children.
With similar ethos to the iconic car rally fundraiser the
Variety Bash, the Variety Splash is a leisurely three-day /
two-night boat rally circling Port Philip Bay, interspersed
with social events and a good dose of irreverent fun.
The 2009 event will commence at Waterfront
City Docklands and ‘Splashers’ will travel a course to Mornington,
across the bay to Geelong, and back up to Waterfront City.
Participants can rest their sea legs during stopovers and nightly
functions, and revel in style during the event’s final
festivities at the Docklands finish line.
With a selection of boats available for corporate and private
bookings in the February 2009 event, now is the time to get
your team together before the silly season really gets underway!

Crossover’ to
a Bar Crusher XS Reef Sport
Bar Crusher’s new XS Reef Sport range of ‘crossover’ plate-aluminium
boats fills the gap for anglers who have been searching for
a hardcore fishing boat with maximum flexibility.
Comprising three models – the 560XS, 620XS and 640XS – built
on Bar Crusher’s most popular hulls, the strong and sleek
XS series has been designed to excel in all scenarios from
the river to the reef.
Bar Crusher director Peter Cleland said the crossover concept
stemmed from consumer enquiries for a boat that was suitable
for estuary, inshore and offshore lure casting, trolling and
bottom bouncing.
“Developed as a true all-rounder, Bar Crusher’s
new XS series meets these demands,” Mr Cleland said.
“Nothing beats an open boat for ‘fishability’,
so we’ve moved the low-profile centre console further
aft and incorporated a number of seat spigots in the floor,
which allows seats to be moved around the boat or taken out
altogether, for maximum fishing space.
“Bar Crusher has become known
as the boat of choice among serious recreational anglers
and these new models again
hit the mark as beautifully-built and well thought-out fishing
machines for those who demand high performance and smart functionality.”
Constructed from heavy duty, pre-stressed marine grade plate
aluminium, the 560XS, 620XS and 640XS follow in the footsteps
of every Bar Crusher model to deliver the smoothest ride of
any aluminium boat on the market.
The ultra-smooth ride is the result
of Bar Crusher’s
high-tech Waveslicer™ non-pounding, deep-V hull, while
the expertly-engineered Rigideck™ sub-floor system ensures
maximum hull strength. Another characteristic of every model
is the amazing stability at rest, thanks to Bar Crusher's exclusive
Quickflow™ water ballast technology.
Measuring 6.10m LOA (560XS), 6.70m LOA (620XS) and 6.85m LOA
(640XS), the boats are respectively rated to carry outboards
from 115ph through to 200hp, with fuel capacities ranging from
150L to 300L.
Rod holders, forward casting platform, livebait tank, in-floor
fish storage tank, berley bucket, large-volume storage pockets
and an easy-to-clean treadplate deck are among a long list
of standard fishing-related features inherent to each model
in the XS series.
Northstar VHF product range expands
Northstar has added another innovative
product to its popular Explorer Series – the Explorer
725 VHF radio with the new 705 wireless handset option.
A full-featured Class D VHF radio with the added mobility
and convenience of up to two optional wireless handsets, the
Northstar Explorer 725 VHF radio combines ease-of-use and cutting-edge
technology to provide boaters with the ultimate in reliability,
flexibility and performance.
Designed for boats over 5m in length, the rugged and dependable
VHF marine radio, and its optional second station wireless
handset, is ideal for the flybridge, cockpit or anywhere a
second VHF station is useful.
Boaters with two wireless handsets
can also use them to communicate in ‘walkie talkie’ fashion
when in range of the Explorer 725, which acts as a relay
station.
Built tough to exacting JIS 7 waterproof/submersible standards,
the Explorer 725 features a powerful 25W transmitter, 5W extension
speaker with listen-back feature and is NMEA 0183 compatible.
The optional, full-function wireless handset contains a rechargeable
750mA Li-Ion battery, built-in radio controls with intercom
compatibility and comes with a 12VDC tabletop charger.
The Explorer 725 also includes Track-Your-Buddy capability.
Unique to the Navico family, Track-Your-Buddy allows boaters
to pinpoint the exact location of other vessels using LL position
polling techniques and displays the position on the latest
line-up of Northstar GPS chartplotters.
The new Northstar Explorer 725 VHF marine radio comes with
a full two-year warranty, with RRPs from $449 (Explorer 725)
and $199 (wireless handset).

Simrad – officially the world’s
best autopilot
The new Simrad AP24-AP28 autopilot series received the 2008
Best Autopilot Award during the recent National Marine Electronics
Association (NMEA) convention, held in California (USA).
The prestigious award is voted by non-manufacturing active
NMEA members and NMEA-certified marine electronics technicians,
and officially acknowledges the advanced technology and superior
performance of Simrad products.
Engineered to provide power and sail
boats, ranging 7.5-24m, with advanced steering functions
and reliable operation, the
AP24 and AP28 models feature Virtual Rudder Feedback (VRF™),
SimNet compatibility and more.
The compact AP24 was developed for
a wide range of vessels, especially boats with limited space
at the helm. With its compact
dimensions and easy-to-read 4” (10.2cm) digital display,
the AP24 fits just about any boat and budget, without compromising
the professional-grade performance boaters expect from Simrad.
The AP28 features a larger 4.5” (11.4cm)
digital LCD screen and rotary knob control, along with the
power to handle
the steering needs of mid- to large-sized power and sail boats
under the most challenging conditions.
Among the units’ many features, Simrad’s VRF™ eliminates
the need for a rudder feedback unit when installed on outboard
powered or sterndrive vessels. Eliminating the rudder feedback
unit simplifies the system, increasing reliability while reducing
overall cost.
Both units harness the power of SimNet,
Simrad’s NMEA
2000®-based data bus, which simplifies installation and
integration with other marine electronics. For example, SimNet
makes the AP24 and AP28 an ideal performance match with Simrad’s
latest IS20 Series instruments.
Both the AP24 and AP28 also share a new look and user-friendly
interface, as well as a wealth of other innovative features,
including:
Depth Contour Tracking (DCT) – which
enables the vessel to follow a specific ledge. Integrated
with a depth sounder,
once a depth to follow is set the autopilot will take care
of the rest.
Integrated Turn Patterns – turn pattern steering, which
enables the autopilot to steer to a selection of different
turn patterns such as U-turn, zigzag, lazy S and more. This
feature is particularly useful when fishing and prefer a different
pattern to DCT.
Advanced Wind Steering (AWS) – which is a new mode for
sailboat steering. This innovative system allows auto steering
to compass, steering to wind, or even steering to wind and
GPS at the same time.
No Drift Course – which maintains a vessel’s Course
Over Ground, even in severe wind and/or current conditions,
saving the navigator time and fuel on long passages.
Simrad also offers several control options for the AP24 and
AP28, including multi-station and wireless remote using the
BWI Innovation Award-winning WR20 RemoteCommander. SimNet compatibility
also ensures these autopilots are future proof and will integrate
seamlessly with new systems.

The
Adventure Flyfishing Co. earns award, critical praise,
dealers and distributors at EFTTEX 2006
US/Australian start-up manufacturer,
The Adventure Flyfishing Co., (AFCo.), recently debuted their
ultra premium all-season fly fishing vests, jackets, bags,
packs and accessories to the European fishing trade and media
at this year’s European Fishing Tackle Trade Show, (EFTTEX),
in Brussels, June 30 – July 2, 2006. Exhibiting at their
first EFTTEX they were extremely pleased to not only have earned
an award and critical praise from press, media and industry
peers, but to have signed several notable distributors and
dozens of premium fly fishing retailers from across Europe.
Nick Marlow, Managing Editor of Tackle Trade World, reports, “As
well as a superb product line-up, the company’s claims
for the functionality and quality of its gear are not just
marketing hype. The attention to detail is outstanding and
the quality of the materials and their manufacture is so good
it’s almost excessive!”

Fishing legend Charles Jardine
and AFCo. founder Robert Gallup
“Fly fishing mad person”,
writer, photographer and artist, Charles Jardine exclaims, “Every
now again a product comes along with that succulent, simply
must have quality about it. The All-Season Vest-Jacket from
Adventure Fly Fishing Co. lit up the recent EFTTEX Fishing
show like a fireworks display in the night: By a huge margin.
Simply put, it was the best “new” thing at the
show. Robert Gallup’s painstaking, common sense approach
to fishing tackle apparel has crafted a vest (we call them
waistcoats!) into something innovative and brilliantly well
thought out; it is also an eminently wearable and functional
design. But it is those added little flashes of genius, that
are invariably overlooked and so vital when chest deep in water,
being pounded by icy rain or burnt to crisp in the searing
heat. Like me, you’ll want to fish in this!”
Guido Vinck, seven times World
Casting Champion and chief editor of BEET fishing magazine
had this to say as well, “At this year’s EFTTEX
we were pleased to meet Robert Gallup, who presented his fantastic
Adventure Flyfishing gear that we had only previously seen
on his website. As a fly fisherman myself for more than 40
years I was immediately impressed with the quality and functionality
of their vests, jackets, bags and accessories. As this gear
was presented in Europe for the first time it was a big discovery
for us, and we are all convinced it is really 100% top-class!
I look forward in the coming months to more fully testing out
the gear in the most extreme conditions, but I can already
say that all preliminary tests of the gear have been exceptional,
with the vest-jacket being the best vest we have ever fished
with, let alone ever seen!”
AFCo. had not originally planned
on attending this year’s EFTTEX, however, based on better
than expected industry, media and consumer response to their
USA/Canadian launch, AFCo. decided to move up their European
debut timetable. Founder/CEO, Robert Gallup explains, “We
had originally planned on introducing our products in Europe
next year, focusing all our efforts on our U.S./Canada launch
this last spring and our Australian/New Zealand launch in the
fall, however, since debuting our gear in the States we have
been flooded with inquiries and purchase requests from European
anglers, with no distribution network in place yet to accommodate
them. A strong sign since we haven’t advertised outside
of North America, and we only started that in April. So, with
the momentum created from our U.S. launch, and encouragement
from European consumers, press and several test market retailers,
we were excited to move up our European launch timetable. Accordingly,
we increased production, committed to an office and distribution
center in Holland, and then rocked up to Brussels looking for
the best dealers and distributors we could find!”
And dealers and distributors
came; in just three days AFCo. signed a half-dozen distributors
and thirty-six dealers from the U.K. to the Ukraine and from
Scandinavia to S. Africa. Robert adds, “All indications
were good leading into EFTTEX, but we were exceptionally pleased
with the response we received. AFCo. Europe is now officially
up and running, with much thanks to several excellent distributors,
such as Peter Elberse, of Elberse International, (distributor
of Rio, C&F, Ross Reels, Dutch Reels, etc.).”
Peter Elberse shares, “I
was initially impressed with AFCo.’s impeccable quality
and amazingly functional all-season gear when first introduced
to it at last year’s FFR show in Denver. Having since
had the opportunity to fish with it through the winter and
now into the summer, I am convinced more than ever of its outstanding
performance, and how truly perfect it is for Europe’s
diverse fishing and weather conditions. As a result, I am pleased
to add it to our premium product line, and genuinely excited
to be able to introduce it to dealers and anglers throughout
Europe!”
Gallup continues, “We’re
a young start-up with a limited product line, but what we do
have we guarantee to be the best in its product category. After
two years of rigorous design, and often abusive field testing
by like minded adventure anglers and guides on five continents,
we are pleased to have developed some of the best, most fully
functional, highest quality fishing gear ever made.” Gallup
concedes, “It’s a bold statement coming from a
fledgling company in an industry dominated by outstanding manufacturers,
but fortunately we were able to start with a blank slate, choose
only the finest components, insist on only the best construction,
and continue designing unconstrained until we achieved something
truly exceptional.”
And willing to back this without question, Gallup insists on
a 30-day 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 2-year manufacturer’s
warranty on all Adventure Flyfishing Gear, anywhere in the
world; adding, “We encourage anyone to take the gear
out and fish it hard for 30 days, and if they’re not
absolutely convinced it’s the best gear they’ve
ever used, or are not otherwise 100% completely satisfied,
they can return it for a full refund!.”
AFCo.’s corporate offices
and U.S. distribution is based out of Carson City, Nevada,
manufacturing management and Pacific Rim distribution is based
out of Melbourne, Australia, and as of August 1, European distribution
will be based out of The Netherlands.

The Adventure Flyfishing Co.
releases light weight compliment to their extremely successful
All-Season Vest-Jacket system at FFR, 2006

In addition to presenting
its recently launched patent pending All-Season Vest-Jacket™ system,
The Adventure Flyfishing Co. will debut its new Waterproof
Vest at this year’s Fly Fishing Retailer World Trade
Expo (FFR) in Denver, August 24-26, 2006.
Only seven months old since
its launch in February, The Adventure Flyfishing Co., (AFCo.),
has rapidly become one of the fastest growing fly fishing manufacturers
in the world. Adding to their main office and distribution
center in Carson City, NV, AFCo. has just opened two satellite
distribution centers, one in Europe and the other in Australia;
all due in great part to their hugely successful All-Season
Vest-Jacket system. The culmination of over two-years of extensive
development and field testing, combined with the highest quality
materials, components and manufacturing available, has produced “the
finest crafted, most fully functional, all-season vest ever
made.” With dozens of unique integrated functions and
features, including the ability to easily convert from a full
function waterproof fishing vest to a full-length fishing jacket,
AFCo.’s Vest-Jacket, as Nick Pujic, Editor of the Canadian
Fly Fisher puts it, “has shattered the fly fishing vest
stereotype, and redefined angling functionality and efficiency
on the water.”
After being introduced to
AFCo.’s Vest-Jacket system last month at the European
Fishing Tackle Trade Expo (EFTTEX) in Brussels, fly fishing
legend, Charles Jardine adds, “Every now and again a
product comes along with that succulent, simply must have quality
about it. The All-Season Vest-Jacket from Adventure Flyfishing
lit up the recent EFTTEX show like a fireworks display in the
night… by a huge margin. Simply put, it was the best ‘new’ thing
at the show. Robert Gallup’s painstaking, common sense
approach to fishing tackle apparel has crafted a vest into
something innovative and brilliantly well thought out; it is
also an eminently wearable and functional design. But it is
those added little flashes of genius, that are invariably overlooked
and so vital when chest deep in water, being pounded by icy
rain or burnt to crisp in the searing heat. Like me, you’ll
want to fish in this!”
Eager to follow-up on the
success of its Vest-Jacket, AFCo. has created a vest-only version
as a lighter weight complement. Gallup explains, “As
hardcore fly fishermen ourselves, we designed the Vest-Jacket
for other like minded anglers – the guys that fish hard
in all sorts of weather and fishing conditions, from sunrise
to sunset… and then some. However, since the launch of
our Vest-Jacket we have been contacted by many less “adventurous”,
but equally passionate, fly fisherman who want all of the Vest-Jacket’s
craftsmanship, functions and features, but without the hood,
sleeves and storm extension. Accordingly, as a lighter weight
counterpart to our ‘hardcore’ Vest-Jacket system
we are now pleased to release our ‘hardcore LITE’ version,
the Adventure Flyfishing Waterproof Vest.”
In the design of the Waterproof
Vest, AFCo. has taken its acclaimed Vest-Jacket, removed its
signature detachable waterproof hood, sleeves and foul-weather
extension, and replaced the contour-fit foam shoulder padding
with a light-weight durable mesh; thereby reducing the overall
weight of the garment by half, while maintaining the rest of
the Vest-Jacket’s remarkable functions and features.
Like its full-bodied counterpart,
AFCo.’s new Waterproof Vest is manufactured of extremely
durable waterproof, breathable, stain and puncture resistant
DuPont Teflon™ materials, with all water critical seams
and pockets reinforced stitched and tape sealed for maximum
strength and waterproofing. Other features maintained in the
vest-only version are genuine YKK zippers, climbing grade nylon
webbing and shatterproof hardware throughout, thirty-three
pockets, including four exterior and interior dry-pockets with
100% waterproof lining and patented YKK Aquaguard™ weatherproof
zippers, a 100% waterproof pocket dry-bag insert, micro-fleece
lined sunglasses pocket, a clear-view license display pocket,
two rod/tube or bottle pockets, and two drop-down interchangeable
fly tray pockets with included interchangeable magnetic bottom
fly trays.
Additionally, like its all-season “brother”,
the Waterproof Vest is also fully rigged to accommodate a large
volume hydration system, (available separately), and includes
the same proprietary features such the Retractor Cavity, where
all coil retractor accessories are completely concealed out
of the way until needed, Tippet Cavity and Easy-Pull Tippet
Dispenser, which combined is “the easiest to use, most
convenient, tippet dispenser ever made.”
AFCo.’s Waterproof Vest
will be released to a select number of premium flyfishing retailers
this fall, (September ’06), with further release and
distribution next spring, (March ’07). The Manufacture
Suggested Retail Price will be $197 USD, and as with all AFCo.
gear, will come with a 30-day 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee,
and 2-Year Manufacturer Warranty.
