Ballarat Lakes

Report Date-5/June /2011

The Fishing Reports are gathered from my personal fishing trips, with some reports coming from other reliable fishermen or other sources in the area. I hope these reports will give you good direction and the completion to a wonderful day.

Ballarat and District Lakes

Newlyn’s Reservoir

Reports sent to me show that some nice trout can be caught when fishing smelt patterns in a size 10 . For the bait fishermen earthworms and scrubbies are also producing the odd trout which are putting on the weight. Fisheries have stocked the lake again with very small brown trout which is good because you going to receive a better quality trout next year, but bad because of people keeping these small trout . (PLEASE PUT THEM BACK) .

Hepburn Lagoon

When this lake was first stocked after the rains the fish incredibly stacked on the weight and there was no effort in catching 20 to 30 trout of 700 grams in a day's fishing. I personally put back very single trout and happily so did all anglers that I saw fishing. When the word got out many people targeted the lake with 60 cars counted one day at the dairy end of the lake . Presently the trout have been caught and educated and all has evened out to were it has become hard to catch a trout and now anglers have to think and use their skills to catch a trout.

I was fishing there yesterday with John Lanchester, and fishing smelting flies where we both caught a few nice rainbow trout close to two pounds. It was bitterly cold but a great day fishing was had.

Lauiston Reservoir

Reports received come from John Guljas who said there are some nice trout moving around the lake feeding on baitfish. John caught a few trout with his best being a nice brown of 4 lbs.

Current Water Levels Images

I intend to keep these photos up to date as often as possible. If you anglers can take a photo of any lakes and heir water levels and e-mail them to me, it would help enormously. We could all then have a great reference source to help our fishing.

Latest Photo of Coliban Reservoir (15/Feb/07) sent in by fly-fisherman Carl Ruban who indicated that the Upper Coliban is being completely pumped out by contractors, with the water going into Lauiston. There are large numbers of large carp in the remaining puddles, throwing a rock in the water produced several large bow-waves and even some carp are not surviving. (See Photo Below)
